Our SEM Specialist Discusses The Pros and Cons of Google’s New Keyword Planner

At Black Tie Digital Marketing, we have a wide variety of skills and knowledge amongst our team and our SEM Specialist, John Budzynski, is available to help you with Melbourne, FL SEO.  John recently graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Marketing.

Google explained in their blog that the, “Keyword Planner combines the benefits of keyword tool and traffic forecasting in an integrated workflow.” But what do these changes mean in the world of SEO and AdWords? Well John believes that there are some definite benefits to this new tool.

“Instead of creating your keyword lists and then importing them into the Traffic Estimator, the Keyword Planner generates the stats from the Traffic Estimator along side its keywords. Now you can see the stats you need as you are creating your KW lists, effectively eliminating a step in the campaign building process,” John explained.

However, with anything there are some drawbacks. John shared that, “Anytime there’s a change to the way AdWords functions or features are added/taken away (which is quite often), most marketers go through an initial period of “How will this affect my campaigns?” or “What do I need to change in my normal processes?” It’s only after a little experimentation and research that users become more comfortable with the new tool. Unfortunately, these periods of uncertainty and experimentation can cause major damage if decisions aren’t monitored carefully.”

This change will have an effect on local businesses using AdWords Campaigns. While my knowledge is brief when it comes to AdWords, I found it difficult to base keywords off of national numbers. While this challenge was difficult for me, seasoned AdWords Specialists were used to its functions; however, the Keyword Planner has readjusted its target region to eliminate this issue.

“One of the benefits of the Keyword Planner is that you can set your target region from the very beginning. This means that small businesses no longer have to pick out their keywords using national numbers, and allows the local business to make decisions based on numbers that apply directly to their target region,” John said.
