When most people think of social media platforms, they think of the industry giants like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, but what about that little platform known as Pinterest? A platform designed to share and visually bookmark posts related to projects and interests, early on Pinterest appeared to serve as a niche platform for crafts and hobbies.
Not-So-Little Pinterest
In his recent Marketing Land article, Benjamin Spiegel dishes about the rise of Pinterest within the social search setting. Over the last year and a half, the number of search engine results containing content from Pinterest has nearly doubled. While the platform still sees more growth in home and beauty categories (400% increase) than electronics (50% increase), Pinterest is seemingly no joke.
What Sets Pinterest Apart?
The reason marketers should have Pinterest on their radar is because of its ability to drive traffic to a website. YouTube and Instagram have an especially difficult time converting views to site visits because of where links are permitted within the platforms. In the land of Pinterest, when a user clicks on an image, they expect to be taken directly to the product’s site, making conversion that much easier.
One More Thing
The lifespan of a pin, as Spiegel notes, is much longer than the lifespan of a tweet or Facebook status. As more tweets and statuses are posted to the news feed, your message will disappear, buried in a digital tomb, only to be discovered again when searched for. Once a pin is posted, it will remain at the top of the page and have the ability to generate traffic for months without needing to think about it again.
